For years, one of the biggest headaches for both local commuters and arriving tourists was the brutal bottleneck at the Fonatur roundabout in San José del Cabo. Construction first kicked off in May 2025 as part of a major federal and state mobility initiative. The project broke ground with a clear mission: modernize the main gateway connecting the residential neighborhoods, the tourist corridor, and the Los Cabos International Airport (SJD).Crews worked round-the-clock across double shifts, seven days a week, to bring this massive vision to life. By June 2026, the grand multi-level interchange was officially open for traffic, fundamentally altering the way people navigate the area.What the $25 Million Upgrade Includes
The project required an investment exceeding 400 million pesos (approx. $25 million USD). It is far more than just a fresh layer of pavement; it’s a total reimagining of urban transit for the city.- The 1.5 KM Underpass: The real game-changer is a new 4-lane underpass (paso a desnivel). Straight-through highway traffic between Cabo San Lucas and the airport can now completely bypass the intersection, keeping the main corridor moving seamlessly.
- Synchronized Traffic Lights: Coordinated closely with the Municipal Planning Institute (IMPLAN), the surface roundabout features an autonomous, synchronized traffic light system. This manages local traffic flowing between the surrounding shopping hubs like MEGA Soriana and City Market without creating sudden backlogs.
- Pedestrian & Cyclist Safety: Prioritizing urban mobility, the project includes nearly 19,500 square meters of new sidewalks, 17 safe crosswalks, a pedestrian bridge, and a dedicated 3,000 m² bidirectional bike lane connecting safely to the hotel zone.
- Green Spaces: To ensure the project matched Cabo's natural beauty, crews relocated hundreds of native desert plants and restored 24,000 m² of vibrant green spaces.
